Pillar 3

We need to invest in, grow, and elevate community specific and community based approaches to address interpersonal violence that prioritize safety, healing, and accountability

Why

  • These approaches already exist and represent a constellation of options and possibilities for preventing, intervening and responding to interpersonal violence

  • Many communities are already engaged in variations of these practices, yet for some they are done quietly, particularly when they operate outside of the criminal legal system

  • A robust constellation of justice beyond punishment is both possible and necessary

These approaches include but are not limited to:

  • Non-punitive practices and paradigms like healing justice, transformative justice, and restorative justice

  • Violence interrupters and credible messenger efforts

  • Non-carceral crisis response programs like CAHOOTS

  • Approaches to safety and justice that focus on the self-determination of communities

  • Supports that make communities safe like housing, healthcare, education, and employment
